Community Learning Network

This is our first new project for 2007 and it entails bringing together literacy programs with employability programs to assist community residents from across West Colchester in reaching their personal and professional goals. We will be partnering with many local agencies such as CoRDA and CALA just to name a few to ensure the success of the project goals.

Great Village Community Kitchen

A community kitchen is a group of adults (and teens) who cook together, preparing meals in large quantities, so that they can divide it up and take it home for their families. It can take many forms, but members usually meet twice a month: once to select recipes and shop for ingredients, then another time to cook the meals. Community kitchens are a way to prepare meals in bulk, saving time and money. They are also a way for individuals to learn cooking skills and nutrition information. Participants also build supportive relationships with the others in the group and work cooperatively with others. Collective, community kitchens are vehicles to address food security issues and support high-risk populations in communities.

Great Village Community Kitchen is currently meeting twice monthly. The first session is a Planning and Learning meeting with an educational component in addition to planning the menu for the next cooking session. We are attempting whenever possible to use locally produced foods in our recipes. The Cooking meeting concludes with a shared meal. Child care is available if requested and families are invited to join the cooks for the shared meal. Great Village Community Kitchen was initiated with the support of a grant from the Along the Shore Health Board. Participants are expected to contribute $2 for each person in the household they are cooking for. Conatct Nan Corrigan at nancy.corrigan@gmail.com if interested in attending our next Planning and Learning Meeting on June 18th.

Recipes from the Community Kitchen will be available from our news/blog page under the Community Kitchens tag.
